In 1975 Caro began to make sculptures in cast and welded bronze. This screen is the first of a series, some of which he imagined would be placed in niches. The curved sheet, held centrally within a framework, dominates the lower portion of the sculpture and leads the eye towards the more complex ‘head’ of the composition which is full of incident. Some of these forms relate to those found in clay pieces made at this period – a number of which may well have been cast in bronze. This screen is made on a human scale, and the bronze is left in in its natural state, without patina. At this time Caro also made his first sculptures in lead and wood.
