In the
summer of 1977 Caro was invited to be artist-in-residence
at the
Emma Lake summer workshop 200 miles north of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
This sculpture is part of th This sculpture is part of the Emma Series that
he started there, and which
was finished after he embarked on his calligraphic pieces.
It is a significant
work, in that it spans a period of change. The open form of
Emma Scribble
allows the viewer to see many compositions within the whole,
as the form
changes markedly from altered viewpoints. Here Caro has reintroduced
coloured paint, as well as using the raw surface of rusted
steel protected
with varnish.
