Woman
on Her Back shows a looser, fragmented interpretation of form,
with the clay seeming to dictate the contour and shape of
individual masses
that appear almost to separate. Caro used actual stones to
indicate breasts,
head and other parts. Although he moved away from figurative
art, he
always maintains that his work embraces humanism. It was after
making
this piece that he thought he could not progress in his work
with clay and
decided that he should try working with steel.
