From 1951 to 1953 Caro worked for Henry Moore. The experience had been formative, especially in the area of drawing. Moore taught Caro to draw as a sculptor. (At the Royal Academy drawing had been taught from the point of view of painting). This figure is more expressively constructed. ‘I was influenced in this seated figure by Courbet [Gustav Courbet 1819-77, said to be the founder of modern Realism]. It’s very architectural; it is all about space contained. It’s about the empty air enclosed by the form.’
