Black holes in the universe are mysterious areas of matter that are so dense and have such a strong gravitational pull that nothing can escape from their vicinity. In his title for this sculpture Caro steers the viewer towards certain trains of thought, especially as the piece was made more or less at the same time that black holes were prominent in the media. Formally, the sculpture is difficult to ‘read’ – except that there is a strong reverse perspective when viewed from one angle. The cubic form seems to be revealed like a parcel being unwrapped. In 1994 Caro celebrated his seventieth birthday.
