The exhibition is based on work in the collection of Sir Anthony Caro OM and is drawn from all periods of his career. From an early terracotta figure, made when he was a student at the Royal Academy Schools (1947-52) to a recent bronze, his progression is charted from figurative sculpture through purely abstract forms to mature works that form part of the epic theme of the Trojan Wars or which are based in his response to painting or musical composition.

Questions put to Anthony Caro by people from East Sussex, together with his responses, have formed the basis of texts on this web site and in the exhibition’s publication. His story is told through fifteen carefully selected sculptures showing the diversity of scale, medium and concepts for sculpture that have established Caro as the foremost living sculptor in Britain today.
