After Caro has been organised by the Hampshire Sculpture Trust at the invitation of Lewes District Council. The aim of Lewes District Council. The aim of the exhibition, which complements Anthony Caro: a Sculptor’s Development held concurrently at Lewes Town Hall and touring, is to raise debate about the nature of contemporary sculpture and to illustrate the diversity of contemporary sculptural practice in terms of the use of materials, techniques and conceptual approach. Visitors are encouraged to go to both exhibitions and form their own opinions about contemporary sculpture.

The exhibitors at Thebes Gallery were selected from a long list of recent graduates from University of Brighton and Winchester School of Art. Some works, by Susan Diab, Karen Laycock and Carl Inder, have been specially commissioned for the exhibition and respond in a very direct way to Caro’s own practice and result from conversations with Caro or research into his work. Over the years many sculptors, as students and after art colle and after art college, have worked as technical assistants in Anthony Caro’s studio: a number of these individuals are included in this exhibition.
