Art exhibitions where old and new meet

The contrast between the modern and historic is being highlighted in a season of art exhibitions. Contemporary art in historic settings is the theme of the shows at the Thebes Gallery in Lewes and the Crypt in Seaford. At the Thebes in Church Twitten, students from Cambridge will exhibit. Their work will range from fashion to architecture and photography. In the summer a major sculpture exhibition is planned with work by graduates from Brighton University and Winchester School of Art. It will be linked to an exhibition of work by Sir Anthony Caro at Lewes Town Hall from July. The Crypt in Seaford has been chosen by the Hayward Gallery in London to house a touring exhibition of screen prints by Patrick Caulfield. Stone carving from Zimbabwe, photography and the gallery’s school’s month are also planned this year. Carole Buchan, Lewes District Council arts officer said: "These programmes for both galleries will bring top quality artists to the region." A free brochure, which previews six months of art exhibitions and workshops at the council ’s twin galleries, is available from tourist information centres, galleries and arts venues throughout Sussex.
